Frequently Asked Questions

Is Northern Harvest Oat + Seed Bread gluten-free?

The ingredients we use do not naturally contain gluten. However, they may have been processed in a facility that processes other gluten-containing ingredients (like wheat) and hence may contain traces of gluten.

Is Northern Harvest Oat + Seed Bread suitable for vegans?

The contents of the mix are 100% plant-based and 100% vegan. Just be sure to use a vegetable oil (e.g., olive oil, grapeseed oil, coconut oil) during preparation to ensure the finished product is vegan.

Can I bake it in a toaster oven?

We strongly recommend baking this in a conventional oven. Due to the more direct heat source in a toaster oven, the outside of the loaf can burn before the loaf is fully cooked.

What if I don't have parchment or baking paper?

If you don't have parchment paper you can either use a non-stick loaf pan that is lightly greased, or a silicone loaf pan. If using any other type of loaf pan, you can grease it more heavily to ensure the loaf comes out smoothly. You will need to slide a butter knife around the edges of the loaf to loosen it. Be very careful when handling the loaf as it will be very hot - handle the pan and loaf with oven mitts.

What if I don't have a standard size loaf pan?

A standard size loaf pan is about 8 1/2-inches (l) x 4 1/2-inches (w) x 2 1/2-inches (d). The cooking instructions apply when using a loaf pan of this size. If your loaf pan is smaller than this, you may still use it but the bake time will be longer (e.g., add an extra 30-40 minutes) to ensure the loaf is adequately dry in the centre. It can also be sliced in half after the first 40 minutes of baking (as per instructions) and the two halves returned to oven. A larger loaf pan may have a shorter baking time and will result in a flatter loaf.

What type of vegetable oil should I use?

You can use any type of vegetable oil that you prefer. Some suggestions are grapeseed or olive oil (Super Seed), or coconut oil (Gingerspice Date & Walnut or Cinnamon Raisin & Almond).

My loaf didn't rise. Is it supposed to?

You can use any type of vegetable oil that you prefer. Some suggestions are grapeseed or olive oil (Super Seed), or coconut oil (Gingerspice Date & Walnut or Cinnamon Raisin & Almond).

What if the loaf is still moist in the centre after baking?

Some ovens can cook at a lower temperature than what it is set at and the loaf may need to bake longer. If you find it is moist in the center, it can be rebaked at 350 F until it is drier. The next time you bake this loaf, you may try a slightly higher temperature, or bake it longer than indicated before slicing it.
